Kennesaw Mountain turned the potential game-tying run into a game-ending double play and survived for a 5-4 win over Harrison on Tuesday in the battle of Due West rivals.
In the top of the seventh inning, Harrison (13-3, 4-2 Region 4AAAAAA) scored three runs on a series of singles, cutting its deficit to 5-4. With one out, a fly ball seemed destined to score the tying run on a sacrifice, but a quick relay to the plate retired the baserunner trying to score from third, ending the game.
Kathryn Woody (7-3) pitched a complete game, striking out seven and walking one, but withstanding 13 hits. She also batted 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Boo Huddleston was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Michy Ramos was 2-for-3.
Abby Broome, Mikenzie Vaughn and Brooke Taylor each had two hits for Harrison, which will travel to McEachern on Thursday.
Kennesaw Mountain (9-6, 4-3) will host North Paulding on Thursday. The Lady Mustangs will be retiring the jersey of Jennifer Fenton, their former star player who went on to play on Alabamas national championship team and is now the coach at North Paulding.
Campbell 9, Douglas County 7: The Lady Spartans scored three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win after Douglas County plated five in the fifth to take the lead.
Chandler Kasprowicz led off the seventh with a base hit. Sierra Logan also got a hit. Emma Thomas hit a two-run single to help Campbell (5-8, 1-2) regain the lead, and she scored the final run on a Douglas County passed ball.
Logan was 2-for-3 with an RBI. RicKell Holmes was 1-for-3 with a two-run double, while Kasprowicz was 2-for-2 and scored two runs.
